For visitors at Alaska Regional Hospital

We want you to feel safe and comfortable when visiting a patient at our hospital. Learn more on this page about the amenities and services we offer our visitors.

Visiting our hospital

Our primary concern is the welfare and swift recovery of our patients. As a visitor at Alaska Regional Hospital, you can assist in a patient's recovery by complying with our visitation guidelines.

Information for our visitors

We encourage everyone to follow visiting hours and suggestions as provided by the nursing staff at our hospital.

Visiting hours at our hospital

When visiting our hospital, please follow any masking guidelines that may be in place. Visiting hours are from 7:00am to 9:00pm.

The main hospital doors are closed after 9:00pm each evening and reopened at 5:00am each morning. During that time, visitors may enter through the emergency room entrance. After 9:00pm, security will have a screening desk set up for after-hours arrivals. With a nurse's approval, you may receive an after-hours visitors pass, but will be required to provide an identification card, such as a driver's license, at the screening desk to obtain your pass.

Visitation restrictions

Circumstances may allow for specific exceptions to any visitation restrictions described on this webpage. Those circumstances include religious visitation as well as a designated support person for a patient with a disability to provide assistance with communication or other necessary components of the patient's treatment. All persons entering under an exception remain subject to appropriate infection control protocols.

Guidelines for visitors

The comfort you bring as a visitor can be an important part of the recovery process. We value the participation of family members, but ask that noise be kept to a minimum. Loud and unruly visitors will be asked to leave the hospital at the nurse's discretion.

If you are feeling poorly or have an active cold, fever, open sore or skin rash, we suggest that you stay at home to prevent passing on any illness. We encourage the use of waterless hand sanitizer and have stations throughout the hospital.

Shirts and shoes are required. We also want to note that some flowers are too fragrant and carry too much pollen for the health of our patients. Certain flowers, particularly stargazer lilies, are not allowed because they may cause respiratory problems or allergic reactions. Please contact your florist if you're unsure about which flowers to select.

We reserve the right to change any of our established policies, especially in the case of community or hospital epidemics, safety issues and other emergencies.

Cafeteria

Due to regulations, the hospital is not able to provide free patient meal trays to you as a visitor. You are more than welcome to utilize our cafeteria, the vending machines on the first floor or the coffee shop on the second floor.

The hospital cafeteria is located on the first floor and has individually priced food items. Vending machines are available in a room adjacent to the cafeteria.

Children's guidelines

Children that are under 18 years old may have two caregivers present during their stay. Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients may have two parents present.

Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times and must report to the nurses' station before entering a patient's room. Children will not be allowed to visit patients in isolation without the permission of the nursing staff.

Hospital chaplain

Your minister is welcome and encouraged to visit you. If you do not have a local minister and wish to be visited by a chaplain, please dial “00” for the operator to arrange for a pastoral visit from a volunteer chaplain. Hospital chaplains represent various denominations from area churches and volunteer their services on an on-call basis.

Hospital chapel

The hospital chapel is located on the first floor in the main lobby. You are welcome to enjoy the serenity of this room for private meditation.

Parking

We provide all day and all night labeled parking for both patients and visitors. For your convenience, we also offer free valet parking. The valet is just outside the hospital’s first floor main entrance (on the west side of the building, off Alaska Regional Drive). No gratuity is required.

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. If you wish to pick up your car outside of the hours of operation, your keys will be with our switchboard operator in the emergency department admitting area. You must present your claim ticket to receive your keys.

Security

Our hospital has a dedicated, 24/7 security staff patrolling all campus buildings and hospital grounds, ready to respond immediately to any problem or request. If you have a security emergency or question, dial “00” for the hospital operator to inform security that you need assistance.

Smoking and tobacco use

Our hospital campus and parking lots are a tobacco-free area. If you are interested in help quitting smoking, we encourage you to call the Alaska Tobacco Quit Line at (888) 842-7848.

Waiting areas

Visitors will have access to lounges near patient care areas. Your sensitivity and courtesy in sharing these areas are important for everyone.
